Is my personal information secure?
+
Yes — protecting your information is a priority. Every connection to LochTags is encrypted with HTTPS, so your details are protected while they travel to and from our site. Your account is isolated: when you sign in, you can only see and manage your own tags and information, and no other customer can access yours. Each tag uses a long, randomly generated code, so your "if found" page can't be discovered by guessing — only someone who physically has your tag can reach it, and it shows only the contact details you choose to share. Your password is stored using strong one-way encryption, never in plain text. No online service can promise absolute security, but we follow current security best practices and give you control over what information you share.
Where is my data stored and who can see it?
+
Your information is kept on secured servers and encrypted in transit. When you're signed in, only you can see your full account details. Someone who finds your item only ever sees the limited contact information you have chosen to show on that tag's page, nothing more.
How do LochTags work?
+
Each Lochtag has a small NFC chip programmed with a unique URL on lochtags.com. When someone with an NFC-capable phone (any iPhone 7 or newer, or Android with NFC enabled) taps the tag against their phone, their browser opens to a secure contact page. The finder fills in a short form, and you get an email notification with their message and contact details so you can coordinate a return.
Do LochTags need a battery?
+
No. NFC tags are passive. They draw power from the scanning phone, so there is no battery to charge or replace. Your tag works for the lifetime of the chip, which is rated for 100,000+ scans.
Does the finder need to download an app?
+
No app needed. NFC tag scanning is built into modern iPhones (iOS 13+ on iPhone 7 or newer) and most Android phones with NFC. The finder simply taps the tag against the back of their phone and a notification opens the contact page in their default browser.
What happens to my personal information?
+
The NFC tag itself contains only a unique code. No personal data. Your name, phone number, and home address are never exposed to a finder. Finders contact you through LochTags' secure platform, and you decide whether to reply.
What's the difference between NFC tags and Bluetooth trackers like Tile or AirTag?
+
Bluetooth trackers actively broadcast a signal and need a battery, an app on the finder's phone, and a network of users nearby to be useful. NFC tags are passive. They wait for a finder to physically tap them, no battery or app required, and there is no recurring subscription. Bluetooth trackers tell you roughly where something is; NFC tags help an honest finder return it to you.
Where are LochTags made?
+
LochTags is veteran-owned and operated out of Leduc, Alberta, Canada. We design and program every tag in-house. We ship across Canada and the United States.
How much do LochTags cost?
+
LochTags are sold one-time in three packs: Starter (1 tag), Standard (2 tags), and Family Pack (4 tags). Live pricing in your local currency is shown in the pricing section on the homepage. The basic finder service is included free with every tag. No mandatory subscription. Bulk pricing is available for businesses and fleets.
Can I use LochTags on luggage?
+
Yes. Luggage is one of the most common use cases. Attach a Lochtag to your suitcase, carry-on, or backpack with a strap, zip-tie, or adhesive backing. If your bag goes missing in transit and an honest baggage handler or fellow traveler finds it, a single tap returns it to you.
Can I use LochTags on keys?
+
Yes. The keychain form factor is one of our most popular options. Attach the tag to your house keys, car keys, or office keys. If you drop them, the finder can tap the tag and message you instantly. Your address never appears on the tag.
What about pet tags?
+
LochTags work for pet collars too. Unlike traditional engraved tags, your phone number is not visible. Anyone who finds your pet can tap the tag and contact you through our secure form, keeping your personal info private.
Can I order tags for my whole fleet or business?
+
Yes. LochTags offers bulk pricing and co-branded tags for businesses tagging vehicle keys, equipment, access cards, or company assets. Email info@lochtags.com to discuss a fleet program.
What if a finder doesn't return my item?
+
LochTags can't guarantee that every finder will be honest. But we make returning your stuff as easy as humanly possible. The vast majority of lost items are found by people who want to return them but can't because there's no contact info. We solve that.
What phones can scan an NFC tag?
+
Any iPhone 7 or newer running iOS 13 or later (background NFC scanning is automatic), and most Android phones with NFC hardware (NFC must be enabled in Settings). For phones without NFC, every tag also carries a printed 7-character code. The finder just types it in at lochtags.com/find.
Can I update the contact info on my tag?
+
Yes. The tag itself contains only a unique URL. Your contact details live on lochtags.com and can be updated anytime through your client portal. No need to reprogram or replace the tag if you change your phone number or email.
Are LochTags waterproof?
+
The NFC chip is fully sealed and waterproof. The tag form factor (plastic shell, metal keychain, etc.) is weather-resistant for normal everyday use.
What's your return policy?
+
30-day returns on unactivated tags, no questions asked, plus a 365-day warranty on every tag: if it arrives defective or stops working under normal use, we'll replace it. Full details on our Shipping & Returns page. Email info@lochtags.com with your order details.
Do you offer co-branded tags?
+
Yes. We can produce tags with your company logo for fleets, dealerships, real-estate agencies, hotels, and other organizations that want to give branded recovery tags to clients or staff. Bulk minimums apply.
Is there a subscription fee?
+
The basic finder notification service is free for the lifetime of every tag — no subscription required. Every tag includes, free forever: your secure profile, instant email scan alerts with location, scan history, and Lost Mode with reward. An optional Pro tier ($19.99 CAD/year) adds SMS text alerts the moment your tag is tapped, alerts to multiple contacts, custom finder messages, priority support, and 20% off any extra tags. Pro is opt-in — the core service works fully without it.
Can a finder call me without seeing my number?
+
Yes. With LochTags Pro. The finder taps 'Private call' on your tag's page, enters their own number, and our relay rings you both and connects the call. Neither side ever sees the other's real number. Text replies to scan alerts are relayed the same way.
What is Travel Mode?
+
Travel Mode helps a finder reach you when you're abroad and your regular number doesn't work. Set your trip dates, WhatsApp, a temporary local number, a back-home emergency contact, and an itinerary panel for airline or hotel staff. It appears on your tag's finder page during the trip and hides itself automatically when you're home. Set it up per tag from your portal.
Can you alert nearby shelters if my pet goes missing?
+
Yes. With LochTags Pro. When your pet is in Lost Mode, one click emails every shelter, humane society, rescue, and municipal animal service within 75 km of your home. Over 110 organizations across Canada and growing. Each with your pet\'s photo, description, reward, and a printable poster. It\'s throttled to once every 48 hours per pet so you never spam them.
Can I make a lost pet poster?
+
Yes, free with every pet tag. When your pet is in Lost Mode, one tap turns their profile into a print-ready LOST poster. Big photo, reward, last-seen location, and a link anyone can open on their phone. Print it, share it, or tape it up around the neighbourhood.
How quickly do I get notified when my tag is scanned?
+
Within seconds. As soon as the finder lands on your tag's contact page, an email goes out to the address linked to the tag. If they fill in their contact info, that comes through in a separate notification with their message.
What if I lose the tag itself?
+
If your tag is lost (separated from the item it was attached to), simply contact us and we'll deactivate the URL. No one can use a stolen tag to learn anything about you, the tag holds no personal data.
